Accessible Golf Pro-Am Raises Awareness and Funding for People with Disabilities to Play Golf Reston, Va., August 3, 2007 - On July 16, the National Alliance for Accessible Golf hosted its first annual Accessible Golf Pro-Am at the Toledo Country Club in Toledo, Ohio. The tournament helped raise needed funding for accessible golf programs* throughout the country, while increasing awareness in the work of the Alliance and its effort to expand the game of golf to those with disabilities.
Over 16 teams converged on the greens for a shotgun scramble that included 16 professional players from the LPGA and PGA Tour, including members of the Nationwide Tour. Each team was paired with a golfer with disabilities from one of the Alliance's program sites from Toledo or Utah, as well as sponsor players. Thanks to Cooper Standard Automotive, the U.S. Golf Association and many other sponsors the teams helped raise needed funding for future accessible golf programs throughout the United States.
"This was one of the most inspiring events I have ever attended," said Alliance President, Trey Holland. "We appreciate the fact so many professional players were able to join us as well as the extraordinary generosity of the sponsors, including Cooper Standard Automotive and the U.S. Golf Association," he added.
Prior to the tournament, guests were treated to an inspiring presentation by world famous golf trick-shot artist Dennis Walters. Walters, a golfer who was paralyzed over 30 years ago, entertained the audience with his combination of golf mastery and human inspiration.
Tournament Sponsor Committee chairman, Jim McElya, President and CEO of Cooper Standard Automotive, echoed Holland's praise for the players and sponsor generosity. "The Tournament's sponsors helped raise the necessary funds to boost our accessible golf programs for the coming year and many have already committed to play in next year's tournament," Jim said. He added, "Everyone had a marvelous time and the pace of play moved along quite nicely".
The Tournament's first place team winners included: Trey Holland, Alliance president, Chris Smith, PGA Tour, Michael Smith, President of the Toledo Mudhens, Andy Lamb, Utah GAIN, and Bill Phipps.
